What is the purpose of these SSAT test preparation study guides?
A pervasive characteristic of SSAT private school admission exams for current fifth through ninth graders is that they are very difficult, oftentimes featuring Math / Reading / Verbal test questions one to two grade levels aboveyour child’s current public or private school curriculum. The SSAT targets a small, highly competitive group of students applying for top private schools across the nation.
Using my years of experience developing training guides for a national test preparation company and manuals for database training / electronic grade-check systems for the Department of Education, I've created SSAT study materials that closely approximate the sequence, scope, phrasing, and difficulty level of actual exams. I've accomplished this through years of meticulous research into individual SSAT test questions and through information acquired from former test participants.
The study guides, used at three local tutorial centers, show you how to compute your child's raw score and identify its corresponding scaled scare which can be compared to the average score ranges of students admitted to Hawaii's top private schools. Thousands of applicants have worked through the hundreds of SSAT practice problems contained within these preparation books to enhance their candidacies in the private school admission process.
This book contains Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and Mathematics Achievement questions similar to those on academic ability tests like the ECAA (Early Childhood Admissions Assessment) distributed by the ERB (Educational Records Bureau).
Punahou and Kamehameha Schools may use tests with similar questions during their admissions process.
This study guide can also be used by candidates preparing for Grade 9 Kamehameha Schools admission. Kamehameha does not use the SSAT but requires applicants to take an academic ability test with questions similar to those in this study guide.

Using these books, what is the best way for my child to adjust to the difficulty of the SSAT exams?
The SSAT is an intentionally difficult test designed to separate "great test-takers" from "good test-takers". If your child is still in fourth grade (preparing for sixth grade entrance) or having difficulty (as most do), have him or her do the "easier" problems first. "Easier" problems are located at the beginning of each Verbal, Math and Reading section of "7 Practice Tests for the SSAT: Lower Level".
How can 7th and 8th graders prepare for the SSAT Upper Level Math sections?
“Math Concepts Practice for the SSAT: LOWER Level” can be used by 7th and 8th graders preparing to take the UPPER level SSAT exam for entrance to ninth grade. 7th and 8th graders in Pre-Algebra or Algebra I would benefit from the comprehensive math concepts practice contained within this study guide to transition to similar but more difficult upper level math problems.
